I've begged Backblaze to create a Linux client for years and there was some chatter about it, but still nothing public. The pricing is great, but the client is bloated, buggy and weird. The first barrier to entry is that there is only one truly "set-it-and-forget-it" *unlimited* provider that has a Linux client - and that is CrashPlan. □Īnyway - one of the main things I want to do is to try to back up everything on my physical units to the cloud. I'm not as happy, but I'm also not in the market for a new setup. Nowadays with ZFS or Btrfs around, cheaper hardware and such. They're very space efficient, and quiet - the form factor is great, and something I haven't found anywhere else (WHY?!?!) - there is a premium for their specifically designed chassis and software - and in the past I've found it to be worth it. There is a bit of feature creep with "all the things" you can do with the synology disk station apps. It's time to spend a few minutes to share something that hopefully will solve a headache of mine - and maybe one of yours. There is no planet where they are on the same page is an Equilogic or something for a SAN, but thats not likely what anyone on this sub is going to buy them for. They work well for backup storage locations and low demand storage applications, but they are not a replacement for a server or a proper San. The power supplies are a single point of failure, so its good to have some extra on-hand so you dont have to wait for an RMA. The synology units themselves and the operating system are pretty basic but robust. We usually get about 5 years out of a unit before it retires to the spare-pile/go-home-with-people-pile Get good quality NAS drives for them, get good quality NVME's for caching, and keep them clear of dust and abuse and they will go the distance. Probably have ~250 or so of them in the wild.-We also have a few of the RS2818RP+ that we use as poor-mans' SANs for backup storage at the office. We use 2Bay and 4Bay units for backup storage.
